Het verhaal volgt de Joodse vrienden Jacob en Ethan voor en tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Hun reis voert de lezer van Berlijn naar kamp Westerbork en uiteindelijk naar Oświęcim (Auschwitz).
Hoewel de historische context achter ‘Beyond the Tracks’ indrukwekkend is, wist het boek zelf me helaas niet te overtuigen. De personages blijven vlak en voelen onderling inwisselbaar aan. Wat ik vooral miste, was de emotionele impact: de diepe angst, de pijn en de honger lijken de hoofdpersonen nauwelijks te raken, waardoor ik als lezer ook op afstand bleef.
Op sommige punten voelt het verhaal gehaast en de schrijfstijl bij vlagen wat gekunsteld. Dat is oprecht jammer, want het is duidelijk dat de auteur gedegen onderzoek heeft gedaan naar de historische feiten.

The story follows two Jewish friends, Jacob and Ethan, before and during World War II. Their journey takes them from Berlin to the Westerbork transit camp and eventually to Oświęcim (Auschwitz).
While the history behind Beyond the Tracks is compelling, the execution unfortunately fell short for me. The characters felt flat and somewhat interchangeable; they seemed largely unaffected by the harrowing events surrounding them. The lack of raw emotion—the grief, fear, and hunger—made it difficult to truly connect with their journey.
At times, the pacing felt rushed and the prose a bit forced. It is a missed opportunity, as it’s evident that the author put a great deal of solid research into the historical setting.
